Research Project
Liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) of intracellular macromolecules is one of the principles used for cell compartmentalization. Misregulation of LLPS processes can cause transformation of LLPS droplets into other physical states such as gels or fibrils, some of which, e.g. amyloids, can lead to neurodegenerative diseases and other pathologies. The project aims to investigate in vitro physicochemical properties of these liquid condensates to understand their life cycle and possible mechanisms of transformation into amyloid fibrils. We will focus on the role of interfaces between the condensate and its environment on the reactivity and dynamics of the condensates. The project employs a multidisciplinary approach combining physical chemistry, soft matter physics, state-of-the-art cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM), and microfluidics. The project will be developed in close collaboration with an onsite biochemistry facility for protein production, as well as with the group of Dr. Stephanie Descroix (PCC) for microfluidics. Cryo-EM will be supported by the strong expertise of the host team. The project is financed by university PSL «PSL Young Researcher Starting Grant».
Candidate profile
- PhD in chemistry or physics, or a related field relevant to the subject matter
- Preferably, the applicant possesses prior experience in one or more of the following areas: soft matter, thermodynamics of polymers, protein chemistry, molecular-scale structural analysis (Cryo-EM or cyclotron experiments), spectroscopies, microfluidics.
- Good communication skill in English is required.
