3D printing process: choose and determine the most efficient processes (mixer + pump) to print structural element with mortar, according to the application needs (layer time, size of aggregate, flow rate, duration of continuous use, etc.)

Low productivity and increasing shortages of skilled labour are the classical but unresolved challenges for the construction industry. The purposeful digitalization and automation of all relevant stages, from design and planning to the actual construction process appears to be a promising solution to master these urgent challenges. Additive concrete construction (concrete 3D printing) has a high potential to be a key part of the solution[1].

The key challenges for a robust concrete 3D printing process lies in our understanding on the processing technology and the material properties, especially at fresh stage and very early age stage.

Indeed, a printable product has to have different characteristics: pumpability, easy to put in place, able to constitute a stable printing structure (constituted of many piled layers ahead of any setting process), etc.

These different characteristics are closely linked with rheology properties of the material: viscosity (pumpability), yield stress and thixotropy (progressive build up in rest conditions helping the material to stay in place under a certain stress), etc.

In this context, the choice of the mixing and pumping process is critical to obtain a robust printable product. Now materials specifications are dependent of the specific intended application, that it be in terms of recipe (maximum size of aggregates, consistency, fine content, etc) or of process parameters (flow rate, pumping length, vertical speed of deposition, duration of continuous production, etc.), which makes it all the more difficult to find a master process frame.

The intern will focus on finding existing pertaining processes (mixers and pumps) in order to give recommendations to our customers. The program will begin with a literature review of existing processes. Based on this knowledge, a selection of the most pertaining equipment will have to be edited according to the characteristics of our materials and the application requirements. Finally some tests will have to be organized (in our labs or in the suppliers’ facilities) and executed to validate this theoretical short listing of equipment.
